The current work of the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart can best be described as three areas of activity:
EVENTS: The programme of Stuttgart Akademie concerts, our subscription series in the Beethoven-Saal of the Liederhalle, includes six major oratorios each year. The Bach Week Stuttgart is dedicated, in the true sense of the word “academy”, to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach – in master classes, seminars, lecture concerts and special events, with the main focus on the cantatas. Finally, the most important event we organize is the Musikfest Stuttgart, a high-quality international classical music festival which marks the beginning of the Stuttgart cultural calendar every September.
ENSEMBLES: The Gächinger Kantorei is one of the leading choirs in Germany, and under its artistic director Helmuth Rilling has attracted audiences of millions for choral music. In the Bach Collegium Stuttgart, the choir has a top-class instrumental partner at its disposal, which increasingly performs on its own in purely orchestral concerts. The Youth Choir of the Bachakademie and in particular the JSB Ensemble (Young Stuttgart Bach Ensemble, as a continuation of the Festival Ensemble Stuttgart), are the outcome of successful attempts to support young musicians specifically.
COMMUNICATING MUSIC: Communicating music has always played a special role in the Bachakademie’s work. From the very beginning, a wide range of opportunities for experts and amateur enthusiasts (general courses, seminars, Musikfestcafés) have formed an important element in our programming. What’s new is a special commitment to young people.
The Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart is a foundation recognised under German civil law. Its activities are financed through revenue income, grants from the City of Stuttgart and the State of Baden-Württemberg, which make up less than 25% of the total budget, and above all through donations and sponsorship. It receives considerable support from its Friends’ organisation, which has around 1.500 members. The Bachakademie, with its headquarters at Johann Sebastian Bach Platz in the west of Stuttgart, employs 20 staff working with the Directors.
