Salon – Bachs Leipziger Debüt

Rund zweihundert Kirchenkantaten aus der Feder J. S. Bachs sind überliefert. Die Mehrzahlvon ihnen entstand in Leipzig. Bachwar im Frühjahr 1723 in die Messe- und Universitätsstadt gekommen, um das Amt des Thomaskantors und städtischen Musikdirektors zu übernehmen. Er setzte sichvorrangig das Ziel, ein Repertoire an Musik für den Gottesdienst zu schaffen. So entstanden ab dem 30. Mai 1723 rund sechzig Kantaten: der sogenannte erste Leipziger Jahrgang. Ihm wird sich die Gaechinger Cantorey im kommenden Jahr widmen, unter dem Titel VISION.BACH. Was wohl bewog Bach zu seinem aufwendigen Vorhaben? Um diese Frage – und was die Bachakademie im einzelnen plant – geht es im letzten Musikalischen Salon der Saison.

Around two hundred church cantatas by J. S. Bach have survived. Most of these were written in Leipzig. Bach had arrived in the university and trade fair city in spring 1723 to take up the position of Kantor of St Thomas’s and city music director. He set himself the goal of creating a repertoire of music for worship. So, beginning on 30 May 1723, he composed around sixty cantatas – known as the first Leipzig cycle. The Gaechinger Cantorey will devote themselves to these works in the coming year under the title VISION.BACH. What might have prompted Bach to embark on this extensive project?
