Kurzbeschreibung

Brief description

Carl Orff’s one-act opera Der Mond (The Moon) received its premiere on 5 February 1939 in the National Theatre, Munich. He took the fable of the same name by the Grimm brothers as a libretto, and added dramatic interjections by the characters who appear: four Rascals on their travels, from a country without the moon, arrive in a country where the moon hangs above a tree and can be kept alight by the mayor with oil in return for a payment by the local people. The Rascals steal the moon, hang it up at home on a tree and now make it into their source of income. In old age each takes a quarter of the moon to the grave with them, but the unfamiliar light causes disquiet amongst the dead. Therefore Petrus intervenes, calms the underworld, takes the moon to heaven and hangs it up there. At the end a small child is delighted: “Ah, there is the moon!” Orff himself called his work “ein kleines Welttheater” (a little piece of world theatre), and the Bachakademie now brings this world theatre piece to the stage of the Liederhalle.
