With Jephtha Handel ended his career as a composer of oratorios, a career which had not always been dazzlingly successful. However, just 25 years after his death, thousands came to Westminster Abbey to celebrate the master with performances of Messiah and Israel in Egypt. What had happened? In what kind of context did Handel live and compose? How did he find the themes of his operas and oratorios?
