Musikfest Themes & Highlights 2016

Sichten auf Bach

Since 2013 the Musikfest has included the concert series »Sichten auf Bach« which has since then developed into a firm festival favourite. Internationally renowned interpreters and ensembles rendezvous musically at the highest level and present »their« Bach at lunchtime in the Stiftskirche (and on two evenings in other locations). This naturally includes a concert by the resident ensembles of the Bachakademie conducted by Akademie Director Hans-Christoph Rademann. Out of this galaxy of Bachian interpretations, everyone can choose his or her own »View of Bach« for themselves...

NachGedacht combines, in the style of a meditation, a half-hour organ recital (entirely with music by Johann Sebastian Bach) with a subsequent short lecture by an entrepreneur/patron from the region. »What do riches mean to me personally?« and »How do I approach riches?« are the key questions which the invited speaker will explore in his/her fifteen-minute public deliberations. In the interaction between Bach’s organ music and the thoughts of an important personality in public life, a multi-faceted space for reflection on this year’s Musikfest theme will be created.

This new, three-part series of events flanks the first appearances of the orchestra at the Musikfest Stuttgart performing on period instruments. With this comes a change in performance practice style within the Bachakademie. Its new name relates firstly to the new sound of the ensemble, and secondly to the concept of an atelier. This intentionally highlights its role as an artistic workshop where a new kind of sound is developed and introduced to audiences.

Unternehmen Musik

Is there something such as a unique international selling point for Stuttgart and its region? There are many answers to this question. One of these is certainly the unrivalled concentration of medium-sized businesses, many of which are world leaders in their own fields. The Musikfest Stuttgart is responding to this diversity of Swabian inventive genius and entrepreneurship with the innovative format of our Unternehmen Musik series: in unusual concert locations – in businesses! – and with specially-chosen programmes, the interaction between hightech and the enjoyment of art creates a festival atmosphere which simply doesn’t exist anywhere else.

It is self-evident that only the music of Johann Sebastian Bach can be the centre of gravity for a music festival hosted by the Internationale Bachakademie. But what exactly does that mean? The »world of Bach« demands not only supreme musical performances, but also inspires us to experimentation and crossing borders in our programming. The BACH.LAB is devoted to the creative deconstruction of the day’s musical events in a late evening »Clubschiene« at the Musikfest: Baroque instruments and electronics, jazz music, video projections, the surprising combination of completely different repertoires and genres beyond temporal and practical performing boundaries: everything is possible in the spirit of the great Kantor of St. Thomas’s!

Stuttgart sings!

Stuttgart is a city of choirs with a large number of secular and church choral societies. On the professional music scene, choral singing is a well-established feature of concert life. Singing is an established characteristic of the city, and this distinctive feature of Stuttgart once again features in the Musikfest Stuttgart in 2016. As the saying goes: »With some people, a person’s riches are measured by the number of songs they carry in their heart.« In keeping with the theme of this year’s Musikfest, we invite you to share the riches of singing with a selected Stuttgart choir. If you’re curious, call by and sing with us!

In this communal hub of the Musikfest, you can meet musicians in their rehearsal breaks, contemplate what you’ve just heard in peace and quiet, or look forward to forthcoming events and chat with other visitors to the music festival. As well as this, at 15.00 there are discussions, signing sessions, encounters with artists and other interested guests.
